Brief history:
It is believed that ,Lord Jagannath temple at Puri was attacked many times in the past and it is said that the idols were transferred to safer places time to time. Chilika lagoon hosted lord majorly at three places- Kankana Sikhari, Gurubai and Chakanasi. All places are beautiful and blissful having strategic locations .
Further when the deities were worshipped at KankadaShikhari (Nairi village) , the servitors used to bring fresh water from nearby Jamuna Nirjhara to use for worshipping procedure. At that time local people used to harvest Spiny gourd ( locally known as Kankada) on this island to offer to the lords. It is assumed that the name Kankana Shikhari might have been adopted due to this reason.
